Power to gas is a technology to convert electrical energy into chemical energy which is in the form of a gas. The gas is either hydrogen (power-to-hydrogen) or methane (Power-to-Methane). Both gases can be used as fuel in mobility, as a fuel for heating and cooking or for the generation of electricity. With power-to-gas it is possible to store excess renewable energy from summer to winter, which can then be distributed in the existing gas network.

In a sustainable energy supply system, we can produce enough renewable electricity from photovoltaic, wind and combined heat and power (CHP) for the winter. In the summer there will be a surplus of renewable electricity which can be used in power to gas plants as a seasonal energy storage. The gas that is produced is a renewable gas which will substitute gas from fossil sources. The system will at same time stabilize the electrical grid.
